Family or freedom? We Are Pan tells the astonishing, true story of the mass evacuation of Cuban children who had to leave communism - and often their families - behind.

Based on the events of Operación Pedro Pan (1960-1962), the book follows the flight of around 14,000 children from Cuba to the USA. Fearing for their children's future after Fidel Castro's revolution, parents organized a secret exodus together with the US government and the Catholic Welfare Bureau. In the United States, the so-called "Pedro Pans" were distributed across the country and mostly placed in foster homes. Many of them never saw their relatives again - their lives changed forever.
