Twelve-year-old J is queer, not yet out, and stuck repeating sixth grade again and again, facing the same bullies and the same isolation each time. Something awful happens at the end of every year before the cycle restarts, but J cannot recall what it is. Then two newcomers appear who are caught in the loop as well: bold, popular Rory and the guarded loner P. Searching for a way out, the three stumble into the Haven, a magical realm of drifting islands, where they learn that breaking free means confronting the fears they have avoided all their lives.
