Framed as something that never happened and is nonetheless true, this series presents a Britain of blood, mud, magic and monsters, in which King Arthur is a warlord and his knights are as savage and strange as the country around them. The young knight Culhwch arrives at Arthur's fortress asking for help with the thirty-nine impossible tasks the giant Ysbaddaden has set as the price of his daughter Olwen's hand, and the resulting quest involves giant-killing and monster-hunting in roughly equal measure. Drawn from Welsh myth rather than the Malory tradition.
