Story

The haunting testimony of Holocaust survivor Emmie Arbel: arrested at the age of five, deported and imprisoned — and the inspiring life she built for herself afterwards.

Arrested with her family in her native Holland, deported, held in multiple Nazi concentration camps, and orphaned by the age of seven, Arbel turned her survival into a lifelong mission to confront every form of such atrocity. Today she lives in Israel, where she and her brother emigrated with foster parents after the Shoah, and she travels frequently to share and record her testimony.

In close collaboration with Arbel, the renowned German comics artist Barbara Yelin has created a brilliant portrait — a "visual biography" — of this remarkable woman: her rebellious spirit, her resistant humor, and the seriousness of her reflection. "Surviving is not over. Surviving is every day." Emmie Arbel: The Colour of Memory is at once a haunting picture of a historic crime, an inspiring account of a modern friendship, a beautiful work of art, and a meditation on remembering. Because, as Yelin puts it: "The long arms of history reach into the present."
