Tannicia is eight years old and just wants to leave home: her brother cheats while playing and her mother constantly sends her to fetch water – „women's work“, as she calls it. But when a sinister sorcerer kidnaps Tannicia and wants to sacrifice her for a dark voodoo ritual, she desires nothing more than to escape.

She does indeed manage to flee, but falls into a swamp and is in danger of drowning. Almost! Shortly afterwards Tannicia wakes up in a strange world, inhabited by talking animals with peculiar customs. Wherever she has landed: the way home will be long, dangerous and full of wonders.
