Four years after taking down the notorious child killer known as the "Nursery Butcher" - and still hunted by the cruel revenge of his accomplices - Harley resumes his work at a new detective agency in the heart of Soho. Together with his assistant Bunty, he takes on his first job: A desperate father asks them to find his daughter, who has joined a troupe around the notorious "Queen of Depravity" Ilse Blau, who, after fleeing Weimar Berlin from the Nazis, is now performing in London.

Soon Harley is caught between all sides: the decadent high society on one hand, West End gangsters and crooks on the other. When a six-year-old child is also abducted from an orphanage, Harley fears his old archenemy may have escaped the asylum. His search takes him through the pale back alleys and shady bars of the capital - into a web of the schemes of a cunning femme fatale, ruthless Glasgow gangsters, influential occultists and disguised SS agents.
