Story
The celebrated fantasy manga returns as a premium hardcover omnibus edition with an all-new translation and redesigned covers. Before life as we know it existed, there were beings that don’t follow our rules of reality – primordial entities called Mushi. In Japan, a man named Ginko wanders the country, investigating how Mushi enter the human world – and how we enter theirs. He is a master of the Mushi … a Mushishi. This edition contains Japanese volumes 3–4 in a deluxe casewrap hardcover with a cover illustration appearing in English for the first time.
Some Mushi can be seen, others cannot. They are a different form of life – and Ginko travels to unravel their mysteries. Some Mushi infest limbs and cause a rust-like rigidity that nearly confines sufferers to bed. Others wrap people in a ghostly sea mist that throws their sense of time off balance. While Ginko observes and finds ways to coexist with the Mushi, he stays firmly anchored in the real world. But when a boy discovers a “false spring” in a barren winter landscape, Ginko himself comes dangerously close to crossing over to the other side.
When it was published in the 2000s, Mushishi earned worldwide praise for its poetic, episodic storytelling and its fine, beautiful artwork: awarded the Japan Media Arts Prize, chosen as “Best Manga” by the Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs, and recommended by the American Library Association as a top read for teens. The series inspired two TV anime adaptations (2005, 2014) as well as a live-action film directed by legend Katsuhiro Otomo, creator of AKIRA. After 15 years out of print, English editions were as rare as the enigmatic creatures themselves – until now.
Kodansha’s new edition of Mushishi features an all-new translation and lettering, plus color pages and cover illustrations never before seen in the US.
