A lavishly illustrated blend of novel and graphic novel, set in a Gothic world of monsters. When a fascinating traveling circus stops in a small, peaceful village, the rumors fly: a terrifying creature is said to perform there.

Narrator Otto takes a seat in the dim circus tent. As the curtain rises, the audience holds its breath – but for an unexpected reason: the supposed "monster" on stage is in truth a human child, while the spectators in the round are real monsters – terrifying and grotesque. Otto, too, turns out to be a shaggy monster boy. Little by little, Otto and the human child get to know each other and change the way they see the world – and each other.
