For almost a century, the Crownsville State Hospital in Maryland has stood as a grim reminder of a dark chapter in U.S. history: a segregated psychiatric facility where Black patients had to endure abuse, neglect, unethical medical testing, and even secret government experiments, before the asylum was finally shut down.
