Story
Twelve-year-old Vale is guildless — and the guildless of Siannerra fear two things above all: first, an injury or illness that leaves them unable to work, and second, the loss of their home. When Vale's Nonno breaks his ankle and can no longer work, the fear of eviction grows. How is Vale to support the family on the few coins guildless workers earn at the harbor?
Fortunately, a new maestro is in town: Maestro Giuseppi and his daughter Stella don't care that Vale is guildless — and even less about the guilds' strict rules. They have come to Siannerra to build the city's first astronomical clock without seeking the guilds' permission. Even better: Giuseppi wants to take Vale on as an apprentice!
Could this be the fulfillment of all of Vale's dreams — or the start of new troubles? Because the city does not react kindly to rule-breaking.
With nuanced, instantly lovable characters and a fully realized, vividly illustrated setting, bestselling author Marieke Nijkamp and standout artist Sylvie Bi show that every person — regardless of age — can change their world. An excellent pick for fans of Lightfall and Wingbearer.
