Seven Wives

One murdered patriarch, seven widows and forty-nine people who saw something. At 9:04 on a Monday morning in April, two detectives drive out to a remote Arizona compound run by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where Matthew Dunn lies stabbed to death on the pulpit of his own temple.

Aguilar and Halwell interview his wives one by one and get little more than recited verses, rehearsed phrases and silence. The braids, the soft voices and the modest dresses turn out to be more than the marks of a controlling husband: they are a shield the women hold up for one another. As the interrogations wear on, that shield starts to crack, exposing years of abuse and what it really took to survive inside the cult. Zoe Tunnell, V Gagnon and Tesslyn Bergin-Dicoi deliver a tense, unsettling crime story.
